Helplines in Norway
If someone's life is in danger, call 113 for a medical emergency, or 112 for the police. If you need someone to talk to, Mental Helse Hjelpetelefonen answers on 116 123, free and anonymous, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Kirkens SOS (22 40 00 40) is also open around the clock for people in crisis, by phone and online. For urgent health problems that are not life-threatening, the out-of-hours doctor (legevakt) is on 116 117.
The main listening lines work in Norwegian, but several services say they offer English. VO-linjen, the national domestic violence helpline on 116 006, takes calls in Norwegian and English, as does the 24-hour helpline for victims of sexual abuse on 800 57 000. Mannstelefonen (22 34 09 60) also answers in English, in the evenings. Alarmtelefonen for children can bring in an interpreter for most languages.
If you are experiencing violence or abuse at home, call VO-linjen on 116 006 at any hour, or use its chat. Shelter addresses are kept confidential, so the helpline is the safe way in and can arrange a place. Children and young people facing neglect, violence or abuse can call Alarmtelefonen on 116 111, day and night, or send an SMS in the evenings. Men can call Mannstelefonen. There is free chat counselling for eating disorders through ROS, and a helpline for gambling problems on 800 800 40.
