Helplines in Austria

If someone is in immediate danger, call 112 or the ambulance on 144. If you need to talk to someone now, TelefonSeelsorge answers on 142 at any hour, free and without an area code. In the evenings, the Ö3-Kummernummer on 116 123 is also free, daily from 16:00 to midnight.

Most Austrian helplines work in German. The exception is for women: every counsellor at the Frauenhelpline gegen Gewalt (0800 222 555) offers English, with Romanian, Spanish, Turkish and Arabic at set times, and the City of Vienna's 24-hour Frauennotruf (01 71 71 9) counsels in German, English and Farsi. If you don't speak German, still call 112 in an emergency; they will find a way to help you.

If you are a woman experiencing violence, the Frauenhelpline is free and open day and night. Shelter addresses are kept confidential, so the helpline is the safe way in and can arrange a place. Children and young people can call Rat auf Draht on 147, anonymously and free. Men and boys in crisis can ring the männerinfo Krisenhelpline (0800 400 777) or the Männernotruf (05 76 77), both around the clock. If you are unsure how urgent something is, the 1450 health advice line answers around the clock. For questions about eating disorders, there is a free hotline on 0800 20 11 20, Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 17:00.

Short numbers such as 142, 147 and 1450 are dialled exactly as shown, from a mobile or landline. 112 works on any phone across the EU, including on a foreign SIM. Every number here was checked at its official source, with the date shown beside it.
