Duty and self reflection
For many people, family is not just something you have. It is part of who you are. Caring for parents, honouring their hopes and thinking of the family as "we" can be a deep source of love and meaning.
Sometimes, though, what your family hopes for and what you quietly want are not quite the same. This reflection is a gentle way to notice where you stand with that, without judging you or your family.
There are 12 statements. Choose how true each one feels for you right now. It is private: your answers stay in your browser and are not stored or sent anywhere. It is not a test or a diagnosis, and there is no "healthy" score to aim for. A higher result simply means the pull between duty and self feels stronger at the moment.
Free, no sign-up. Your progress is saved only in this browser on this device, so you can stop and come back later. Nothing is sent to anyone.
Please reach out for support now
You said you might be in danger. Please call 112 (Europe) or 999 (UK), or Samaritans on 116 123 (UK and Ireland). Find a helpline in your country. Booking a counselling session is not the right first step right now.

What you could do next
You might take one statement that stood out and sit with it for a moment. What would you say about it, if nobody else were listening?
The family duty and self and people-pleasing pages explore these themes further. If you would like to talk with someone who understands collectivist and South Asian family life, you can read my page on counselling for South Asian women and families or book a session. I am a trainee person-centred counsellor and BACP student member, working under supervision, offering sessions online from the UK.
If you feel unsafe at home or are thinking about harming yourself, please reach out now rather than waiting. In the UK, call Samaritans free on 116 123, any time, or 999 in an emergency. Across the EU, call 112. Checked helplines for your country are in the helpline register.
Questions people ask
Is this reflection telling me to set boundaries with my family?
No. It doesn't assume that distance from family is the goal. Close family ties, duty and care for parents can be deeply meaningful. The reflection simply helps you notice where your own wishes, guilt and voice sit at the moment. What you do with that, if anything, is entirely your choice.
Does a high result mean my family is unhealthy?
No. A higher result means the pull between your family's hopes and your own wishes feels strong right now. That can happen in loving families, especially when you live between two cultures or far from home. It says nothing about anyone being good or bad. It is a starting point for reflection, not a judgement.
Are my answers saved anywhere?
No. The reflection runs only in your browser. Your answers are not stored, sent anywhere or seen by anyone, including me. If you refresh or close the page, they disappear. If you would like to remember your results, you can write them down for yourself.
